FAA Ground Stop Triggers Widespread Disruptions
Travelers at Newark Liberty International Airport faced major disruptions Thursday morning, just days before the busy Labor Day weekend.
A temporary FAA ground stop halted flights due to equipment and communication issues affecting radio frequencies in the Philadelphia TRACON area, which manages Newark arrivals and departures.
By 12:30 p.m., the FAA lifted the ground stop at both Newark and nearby Teterboro Airport. However, delays continued to ripple through the system.
FAA Statement on the Issue
In a statement, the FAA explained:
“The FAA cancelled the ground stop and is now slowing flights into Newark Liberty International Airport due to equipment issues that affected some radio frequencies… We are investigating the cause.”
Hours-Long Delays for Travelers
- As of 1 p.m., inbound flights to Newark were experiencing average delays of more than two hours, according to FlightAware.
- Some arrivals faced waits ranging from 31 minutes to nearly two hours.
Not the First Time Newark Struggles
This latest disruption follows a series of operational issues earlier in the spring, caused by:
- Air traffic controller shortages
- Outages at the air traffic control center
- Runway construction that further limited capacity
The combination of these factors has left Newark travelers increasingly frustrated as one of the nation’s busiest hubs continues to experience reliability issues.
