Air travel can be stressful—long lines, cramped seats, and even fear of flying. Many passengers turn to alcohol to relax, but research shows drinking at altitude may not be the best idea for your health.

What Science Says

A 2023 study in the medical journal Thorax found that drinking alcohol in an airplane cabin:

  • Decreases blood oxygen levels
  • Raises heart rate during sleep
  • Puts extra strain on the cardiovascular system
  • Reduces sleep quality

Why? Cabin pressure is already lower at altitude, making breathing harder. Alcohol amplifies this effect.

The Hydration Factor

Airplane cabins are notoriously dry, and alcohol only worsens dehydration.

Nutrition expert Kathleen Benson, CSSD, CPT, RDN (VNutrition) explains:

“Alcohol acts as a diuretic, increasing fluid loss. In flight, this adds to the dehydrating effect of cabin air, which can make you feel more tired, foggy, or bloated.”

She also warns alcohol can worsen anxiety or fatigue, effects that are often stronger in the air than on the ground.

Healthier Ways to Drink in the Air

If you do decide to sip, here are Benson’s tips for drinking smarter at altitude:

  • Pair alcohol with a protein-rich snack – slows absorption and keeps blood sugar steady
  • Always drink a glass of water alongside alcohol – helps with hydration
  • Choose lower-alcohol options – wine spritzer, Champagne, or dry white wine are gentler choices than sugary cocktails
  • Pace yourself – slow sipping prevents that mid-flight crash

💡 Pro tip: Don’t splurge on fancy wine while flying—air pressure dulls your sense of taste anyway.

Bottom Line

  • Alcohol in the air = stronger effects than on the ground
  • Risks include worse sleep, dehydration, fatigue, and increased anxiety
  • Moderate drinking can be safe for most healthy adults if balanced with hydration and food

If you already notice alcohol affecting your mood or health on the ground, it’s best to skip the booze in-flight and reach for a refreshing ginger ale instead.
