Spirit Airlines announced Monday that 1,800 flight attendants will be placed on furlough before the end of the year, as the ultra-low-cost carrier grapples with its second bankruptcy in less than 12 months.

Temporary Leave Amid Reduced Demand

The airline said the “difficult decision” was necessary to align staffing with reduced flight demand.

“We recognize the impact of this decision on affected team members, and we are committed to treating them with care and respect during this process,” Spirit said in a statement.

The furloughs are scheduled to begin later this year as part of the company’s broader cost-cutting strategy.

Union Response and Voluntary Options

The Association of Flight Attendants (AFA) confirmed that Spirit will first seek volunteers willing to take six-month or one-year furloughs starting November 1. If not enough volunteers come forward, involuntary furloughs will begin December 1, with seniority guiding the process.

The union said it is working to secure “preferential interviews” with other airlines to help displaced flight attendants transition.

In a letter to its members, the AFA acknowledged:

“While we initially succeeded in staving off furloughs, the significant reduction of aircraft and flight hours requires a much higher reduction in force.”

Service Suspensions Across the U.S.

Spirit, headquartered in Florida, confirmed it will suspend service in a dozen U.S. cities beginning in October. These include:

  • Albuquerque, NM
  • Birmingham, AL
  • Boise, ID
  • Chattanooga, TN
  • Columbia, SC
  • Portland, OR
  • Salt Lake City, UT
  • Sacramento, CA
  • Oakland, CA
  • San Diego, CA
  • San Jose, CA

The cuts are part of a downsizing effort as the carrier tries to stabilize operations.

Financial Struggles Since the Pandemic

Known for its bright yellow planes and no-frills model, Spirit has faced mounting challenges since the COVID-19 pandemic. Rising operating costs and heavy debt have pushed the airline into repeated financial trouble.

  • Spirit filed its first Chapter 11 bankruptcy in November 2024, citing losses of more than $2.5 billion since 2020.
  • The airline re-emerged from bankruptcy in March but quickly announced further cutbacks, including plans to furlough 270 pilots and downgrade 140 captains to first officers starting this fall.
  • On September 1 and November 1, 2025, those pilot changes will take effect, tied to lower anticipated demand through 2026.

Uncertain Future and Failed Buyouts

Spirit has floated the possibility of selling aircraft and real estate to raise cash. Its relatively young fleet could make it appealing to competitors, yet attempts at buyouts by JetBlue and Frontier collapsed both before and during its first bankruptcy.

The airline remains in a precarious position as it works to restructure while cutting jobs, suspending routes, and exploring asset sales.
