Travelers on United Airlines faced temporary delays Tuesday night after the carrier requested a ground stop that briefly suspended all of its departures in the U.S. and Canada.
What Happened
According to United, the airline experienced a connectivity issue just before midnight Central Time. As a precaution, United asked the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to issue a ground stop, pausing all departures.
The disruption lasted about 30 minutes before flights were cleared to resume.
“We experienced a brief connectivity issue … but have since resumed normal operations,” the airline confirmed in a statement.
Not the First Time
This is the second ground stop in less than two months for United Airlines.
- Early August 2025: United issued a similar halt affecting major airports including Newark, Denver, Houston, and Chicago. That outage lasted several hours and caused widespread delays across the airline’s network.
- In both cases, the airline attributed the interruptions to unspecified technology issues.
Impact on Passengers
While Tuesday’s pause was short-lived compared to the August incident, it still caused flight delays and temporary confusion at multiple airports. United said operations were fully restored shortly after midnight.
For now, the airline has not disclosed further details about the nature of the connectivity problem.
The Bigger Picture
United’s back-to-back technology glitches highlight the fragile reliance on complex IT systems in modern aviation. Even short disruptions can ripple across flight schedules, impacting thousands of passengers.
Travelers are advised to check their flight status regularly via the United app or airport departure boards whenever disruptions occur.
