ATLANTA (AP) — In the shadow of the world’s busiest airport sits one of the finest collections of aviation history. The Delta Flight Museum, located beside Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International Airport, offers visitors an immersive journey through more than a century of commercial flight.

A Century of Aviation Preserved

Housed in two historic Delta Air Lines hangars, the museum showcases the evolution of air travel — from crop-dusting planes to modern wide-body jets. But beyond the exhibits open to the public, there’s an entire world of treasures hidden behind closed doors.

Archivist Marie Force oversees the museum’s vast collection, which includes thousands of artifacts stored away from view — among them, an impressive array of vintage uniforms.

“This is one of my favorites — very colorful,” Force said, showing a closet filled with avocado green, pimento red, and sunshine yellow uniforms from Northeast Airlines, which merged with Delta in 1972.

According to Force, the museum’s uniform collection dates back nearly a century.

“I think the earliest flight attendant uniform is probably from the 1930s with Western Air Express,” she said. “But for pilots, we have items that go back to World War I.”

Memories from the Golden Age of Flight

Two retired flight attendants, Kay Carpenter and Susan Slater, both began flying for Delta in the mid-1960s, and many of the museum’s vintage uniforms were once part of their daily routine.

“You had to be unmarried — never been married,” Slater recalled with a laugh. “Your hair couldn’t touch your collar. You had a weight restriction. I think I weighed 103 pounds and was 5-foot-2-and-a-half.”

Carpenter described her decades at Delta as “a wonderful adventure.”

“When I started, we flew to small cities in small airplanes. Now we fly to six continents. I never dreamed I’d see the places I’ve seen.”

Inside the Archives: Hidden Treasures of Delta’s Past

The Delta Flight Museum archives hold row after row of aviation history — each item telling a unique story of flight.

One shelf features Delta founder Collett E. Woolman’s business card, dating back to the airline’s early crop-dusting days. In another drawer sits one of Force’s favorite items — a matchbook from Chicago and Southern Air Lines, with the matches designed as miniature flight attendants.

“They had just started flight attendant service,” Force explained.

Among the most fascinating discoveries: a Delta Air Lines ticket from 1929, the airline’s first year flying passengers.

“That first ticket was $90 round trip,” said Force. “That would cover the full route, like flying from Dallas to Jackson.”

Adjusted for inflation, that $90 ticket would cost about $2,945 in 2025.

Building a Legacy of Flight

From matchbooks and menus to pilot wings, route maps, playing cards, and mini liquor bottles — the Delta Flight Museum’s archives chronicle nearly every aspect of the airline’s evolution.

For over five decades, Delta and its museum have been curating these treasures, preserving the airline’s heritage while celebrating its continued growth.

The result is more than just a museum — it’s a living timeline of aviation history, honoring the people, planes, and progress that have kept Delta Air Lines soaring for nearly 100 years.
