SALT LAKE CITY — A Delta Air Lines flight bound for Utah was forced to turn back to Los Angeles on Saturday after a strong odor — traced to spoiled food brought onboard by a passenger — prompted the crew to divert the plane, airline officials confirmed.

The Unexpected Turnaround

Delta Flight 2311, operating from Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) to Salt Lake City International Airport (SLC), departed Saturday afternoon with 189 passengers, two pilots, and four flight attendants aboard an Airbus A321neo.

Shortly after takeoff, passengers and crew noticed an unpleasant smell spreading through the cabin. The odor was later determined to be caused by a spoiled food item that a passenger had brought onto the aircraft.

Rather than endure the stench for the remainder of the nearly two-hour flight, the pilots made the decision to return to Los Angeles out of an abundance of caution.

Delta’s Official Statement

In a statement to KSL, a Delta spokesperson confirmed the reason for the diversion:

“As nothing is more important than the safety of our customers and people, our crew followed standard procedures to safely return to Los Angeles after an unpleasant odor was detected onboard. We apologize to our customers for the delay in their travels.”

Delta did not specify the type of spoiled food responsible for the incident.

Passengers Reaccommodated

The aircraft landed safely at LAX without incident. Once on the ground, Delta arranged for all passengers to be reaccommodated on another aircraft to complete their journey to Salt Lake City later the same day.

No injuries or medical emergencies were reported as a result of the odor.

Standard Safety Procedures

While diversions due to mechanical issues or medical emergencies are not uncommon, returning to the airport because of a strong odor is highly unusual.

Aviation experts note that even though smells in the cabin may not always indicate danger, airlines are trained to act conservatively when the source of an odor is unknown — particularly if there’s any possibility it could stem from a chemical leak or smoke event.

In this case, the crew followed FAA-recommended safety protocols, ensuring passenger welfare remained the top priority.
