Three international airlines canceled flights departing from Venezuela on November 22 following a warning from the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration about a “potentially hazardous situation” in Venezuelan airspace.
Airlines That Suspended Flights
Gol, Avianca, and TAP Air Portugal
Brazil’s Gol, Colombia’s Avianca, and TAP Air Portugal canceled their scheduled flights from Caracas, according to Flightradar24 and Simón Bolívar International Airport.
Additional Airline Actions
- TAP Air Portugal canceled flights on November 22 and November 25, citing U.S. aviation authorities’ safety concerns.
- Iberia suspended flights to Caracas from November 24 until further notice, though its Saturday flight to Madrid departed as scheduled.
- Copa Airlines and Wingo continued operating flights from Maiquetía on Saturday.
- Latam Airlines also canceled its November 23 Bogotá-bound flight.
Security Concerns
Aeronáutica Civil de Colombia noted “potential risks” when flying in the Maiquetía area due to deteriorating security conditions and increased military activity in the region.
The FAA’s notice warned of:
- A worsening security situation
- Heightened military activity in and around Venezuela
- Risks to aircraft at all altitudes
Regional Military Context
The warning comes amid significant U.S. military buildup in the region, including:
- The U.S. Navy’s largest aircraft carrier
- At least eight other warships
- F-35 fighter aircraft
Outlook
Iberia stated it will continue assessing the situation before resuming flights. Other carriers have also indicated they will monitor regional security before restoring normal operations.
