Japan Airlines (JAL) has announced plans to restart flights between Tokyo Narita (NRT) and Delhi (DEL) beginning January 17, 2026. The route will be operated once daily using a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, marking the return of a long-paused connection between two of the world’s busiest travel markets.

Expanding Service Between Japan and India

The new Narita–Delhi service complements JAL’s existing Haneda–Delhi route, giving travelers two options for flying between Tokyo and India’s capital. Each airport caters to different types of passengers — Haneda for direct travelers, and Narita for those making international connections.

JAL said the move reflects its goal to capture multiple market segments, including:

  • Japanese leisure travelers visiting India
  • Indian business and student travelers to Japan
  • Connecting passengers flying between India, North America, and Europe

Japan Airlines Narita–Delhi Flight Schedule

  • Flight JL749: Departs Narita at 20:15, arrives in Delhi at 03:00 (+1 day)
  • Flight JL740: Departs Delhi at 04:35, arrives in Narita at 15:10

The schedule allows smooth transfers for passengers connecting from daytime flights arriving from North America or Europe into Narita. The afternoon return arrival also enables onward connections to global destinations.

While Narita Airport is about 60 kilometers from central Tokyo, it serves as JAL’s major international hub, handling long-haul flights to North America, Europe, and Asia.

Route History: A Longstanding Connection

JAL’s relationship with Delhi dates back to May 4, 1965, when it first launched flights to India.
For most of its history, the route operated through Narita Airport until late 2019, when it was shifted to Haneda — just before the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted global aviation.

By offering flights from both Haneda and Narita, Japan Airlines can now serve:

  • Point-to-point passengers between Japan and India
  • Connecting travelers flying between India and North America or Europe via Tokyo

After nearly six years, the Narita–Delhi route will return in January 2026, joining Haneda’s ongoing service.

Why Add Narita When Haneda Already Exists?

The new Narita route is designed for connecting traffic — travelers who don’t necessarily visit Tokyo but use it as a hub.

This includes:

  • Americans traveling to India via Tokyo instead of the Middle East or Europe
  • Indians connecting to Canada or the U.S. through Narita

JAL’s codeshare partnership with IndiGo Airlines (6E) — India’s largest carrier — strengthens this network. Passengers from smaller Indian cities can connect through Delhi onto JAL’s international routes, including San Francisco, Los Angeles, and New York.

This dual-hub strategy also helps JAL compete more effectively with Middle Eastern airlines such as Emirates and Qatar Airways, which currently dominate India–North America travel via Dubai and Doha.

The Bottom Line

With the Narita–Delhi route’s return, travelers will have two daily Japan Airlines options between Tokyo and Delhi:

  • Haneda–Delhi for direct city-to-city travelers
  • Narita–Delhi for international connectors

Haneda remains the preferred airport for convenience, especially for those flying domestically within Japan. Narita, on the other hand, is strategically positioned for long-haul and connecting flights.

The dual-airport strategy offers flexibility and additional capacity, improving connectivity for passengers on both ends and enhancing JAL’s competitive edge in the India–Japan–North America corridor.
