SmartLynx Airlines has announced that it will cease all operations this month, becoming the latest regional carrier to collapse amid mounting financial pressures across the aviation sector.
A Growing Trend of Regional Airline Failures
Smaller carriers worldwide have faced increasing difficulties in recent months:
- Eastern Airways and Blue Islands abruptly canceled all flights to England and Scotland, leaving thousands of travelers stranded.
- Scandinavian airlines Play and Braathens Aviation shut down earlier in the fall, triggering further widespread disruptions across Europe.
- Additional closures in 2025 include Ravn Alaska, Air Belgium, and Florida-based charter operator Verijet.
In nearly all cases, the shutdowns stemmed from a combination of high operating costs and insufficient passenger traffic to remain competitive.
Why SmartLynx Latvia Is Shutting Down
Founded in 1993, SmartLynx Latvia operated as part of the larger SmartLynx Group.
Instead of traditional passenger routes, the airline specialized in:
- Charter flights
- Cargo operations
- ACMI (Aircraft, Crew, Maintenance, and Insurance) / wet-lease services
These services supported airlines needing short-term aircraft capacity across Europe, Asia, and North America.
Official Statement
In a Nov. 25 announcement, the company confirmed the shutdown:
“As of today, we will be ceasing our commercial operations. This decision comes after a thorough assessment of our situation and long-term outlook… We started as a small Latvian airline with big dreams, and over 33 years grew into an international family known for resilience, adaptability, and a spirit that never backed down.”
Staff Stranded and Unpaid
According to Airline Routes & Grand Services:
- Hundreds of SmartLynx staff have been abruptly left without jobs.
- Many employees were stranded abroad, including in Vietnam, when the shutdown was announced.
- Several report they have not received their final paychecks.
- In at least one case, crew members had to buy their own tickets home due to lack of support from the company.
Representatives of SmartLynx have not commented on repatriation plans for displaced employees.
Other Major Airline Bankruptcies in 2025
Several carriers have also filed for bankruptcy or ceased operations this year:
- Spirit Airlines — Filed Chapter 11 for the second time on Aug. 29, 2025
- Ravn Alaska — Ceased operations in August after earlier restructuring
- Corporate Air — Filed Chapter 11 in September 2025 as part of a planned sale
- Verijet — Filed Chapter 7 and shut down all flights in October 2025
- Kachina Air, Inc. — Filed Chapter 11 on Oct. 24, 2025
SmartLynx Latvia itself reportedly held:
- €240 million ($277 million USD) in liabilities
- €500,000 ($577,000 USD) in unpaid taxes to the Latvian government

The collapse of SmartLynx adds to a pattern of instability among regional and charter airlines.
These carriers often operate on thin margins and struggle with:
- Surging fuel costs
- Limited demand
- Rising taxes and airport fees
- Intense competition from major airlines
As a result, the industry continues to see a wave of closures and consolidations, leaving travelers and employees in difficult situations.
