COPENHAGEN, Denmark — Flights at Copenhagen Airport were suspended and diverted overnight after multiple large, unidentified drones were spotted flying near Scandinavia’s busiest airport.
Operations resumed early Tuesday, but officials warned of ongoing delays and cancellations.
Airport Impact
- Two to three drones were reported late Monday night.
- Outbound flights were grounded, while others were diverted to nearby airports.
- Copenhagen Airport confirmed reopening but advised passengers to check with their airlines for updated travel information.
Local media showed a heavy police presence around the airport during the disruption.
Related Incident in Norway
The same evening, Oslo Airport in Norway also reported a drone sighting.
- All traffic was temporarily moved to a single runway.
- Flights later returned to normal.
- The perpetrator remains unknown.
Police Statement
At a press briefing, Jens Jespersen of Copenhagen Police said the drones were flown with remarkable skill and precision:
“The number, size, flight patterns, time over the airport — all of this indicates a capable actor. Which capable actor, I do not know.”
Authorities chose not to shoot down the drones, citing risks to passengers, aircraft, and nearby fuel depots.
Investigation Ongoing
Investigators are examining how the drones reached the airport:
- They may have been launched from land.
- Another possibility is from boats entering the Baltic Sea through key strategic straits.
Jespersen said authorities cannot rule out the possibility of a Russian hybrid attack.
