Airline Cuts Three Long-Haul Services Amid Demand Shifts

Hawaiian Airlines is making major adjustments to its international and domestic network this fall, announcing the suspension of three long-haul routes — including the longest nonstop domestic flight in the United States.

The Honolulu-based carrier confirmed it will discontinue service between:

  • Honolulu and Boston (5,095 miles, the nation’s longest domestic flight)
  • Honolulu and Seoul, South Korea
  • Honolulu and Fukuoka, Japan

The changes will take effect in November 2025, with aircraft capacity redirected to higher-demand destinations across the Pacific.

CEO: “Always a Difficult Decision”

Hawaiian Airlines CEO Joe Sprague acknowledged the significance of the cuts:

“It’s always a difficult decision to suspend a route, especially in cities like Seoul, which we have enjoyed serving for over 14 years. However, despite our team’s best efforts, soft post-pandemic travel demand from Asia, combined with various market challenges, have persisted in Seoul, as well as in Fukuoka and Boston.”

The airline noted that demand recovery on these routes has lagged since the pandemic, prompting the strategic shift.

Final Flights Scheduled

  • Boston & Fukuoka routes: last flights on November 19
  • Seoul route: final flight on November 21

Affected passengers will be contacted directly by Hawaiian Airlines with options to rebook on alternative flights or request refunds.

Redeployment of Aircraft

The suspended routes were previously operated by Airbus A330-200 aircraft. These planes will now be redeployed to strengthen frequency on high-demand markets.

Expanded Service on Popular Routes

With the reshuffle, Hawaiian Airlines will increase capacity across several destinations:

  • Sydney, Australia: upgraded from 5 flights per week to daily service (Dec 18 – Jan 31)
  • Papeete, Tahiti: flights will double to two per week starting March 2026
  • Los Angeles: a fifth daily flight during peak holiday periods (November – early 2026)
  • Seattle: expanded to four daily flights (late Nov – mid-April)

Strategy for the Future

The airline emphasized that these changes reflect a focus on profitability and resiliency, allowing resources to be concentrated on routes showing strong passenger demand and sustainable growth.
