WEYERS CAVE, Va. — The Shenandoah Valley Airport Commission announced that American Eagle flights operated by SkyWest Airlines will begin new daily service from Shenandoah Valley Airport (SHD) to Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD) and Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) starting February 3, 2026.
Daily Flights to Two Major Hubs
According to the airport’s press release, SkyWest Airlines will operate the new routes using dual-class regional jets seating between 65 and 76 passengers, including a first-class cabin for an enhanced travel experience.
“We are thrilled to welcome SkyWest Airlines back to the Shenandoah Valley market,” said Michael Heatwole, chairman of the Shenandoah Valley Airport Commission. “This new service represents an important step forward in expanding air connectivity for our region. We believe these routes will not only enhance travel opportunities for Shenandoah Valley residents but also support economic growth by strengthening business and tourism ties throughout the region.”
SkyWest will also hire a local team at SHD to support the new flights and assist passengers traveling to and from the area.
Seamless Travel with American Airlines
Through a full codeshare agreement with American Airlines, SHD passengers will enjoy streamlined travel experiences, including:
- Seamless check-in and baggage transfers
- Access to American’s global route network
- Earning AAdvantage frequent flier miles
Flight schedules have been designed to maximize connection opportunities for both business and leisure travelers. Tickets are now available at aa.com and via the American Airlines mobile app.
Chicago Service Returns to the Valley
The return of flights to Chicago O’Hare marks an exciting milestone for the community. SHD previously offered service to Chicago through United Express, a route that proved highly popular with local travelers.
“We’re excited to return to Shenandoah Valley and to provide these new American Eagle flights to Chicago and Charlotte,” said Cody Thomas, managing director of market development at SkyWest Airlines. “Travelers will now have access to two major airline hubs, making it easy to connect to hundreds of destinations on American’s worldwide network.”
Transition from Contour Airlines
Contour Airlines will continue operating flights from SHD to Charlotte Douglas International Airport through February 1, 2026, ensuring a smooth transition between carriers.
“We are deeply grateful to Contour Airlines for their service to our community over the past three years,” said Heather Ream, SHD’s director of marketing and communications. “Their partnership has been invaluable in keeping the Shenandoah Valley connected, and we sincerely appreciate their commitment to our travelers. Charlotte has long been a popular hub for Valley residents, and we are excited that this important connection will continue seamlessly with SkyWest’s new American Eagle service.”
