Macon, GA — Travelers in Middle Georgia hoping for new nonstop service to South Florida will have to wait. Spirit Airlines has officially canceled its planned flights between Macon’s Middle Georgia Regional Airport (MCN) and Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL), which were originally scheduled to begin on October 16, 2025.

The Original Plan

Back in July, Macon-Bibb County announced Spirit’s upcoming service with excitement.

John Kirby, Spirit’s Vice President of Network Planning, said at the time:

“We look forward to offering travelers in Middle Georgia new nonstop flights and affordable fares to our FLL gateway… We’re grateful to Contour for their partnership and collaboration as we work to create exciting new connections between communities across our networks.”

The launch would have marked a significant expansion of options for Middle Georgia travelers, providing direct access to Florida and beyond.

Why Spirit Backed Out

This week, however, Spirit Airlines confirmed it will no longer move forward. A spokesperson cited a strategic shift to focus on stronger-performing markets as the reason.

The airline also revealed it is pulling out of several airports nationwide, including:

  • Albuquerque (ABQ)
  • Birmingham (BHM)
  • Boise (BOI)
  • Chattanooga (CHA)
  • Columbia (CAE)
  • Oakland (OAK)
  • Portland (PDX)
  • Sacramento (SMF)
  • Salt Lake City (SLC)
  • San Diego (SAN)
  • San Jose (SJC)

These service cuts will begin the week of October 2, 2025.

Bigger Picture: Bankruptcy & Restructuring

The decision comes as Spirit’s parent company, Spirit Aviation Holdings, Inc., filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on August 29, 2025.

The filing, made in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York, will allow Spirit to restructure operations while continuing to fly.

According to the airline, this rollback is part of its plan to “position Spirit for long-term success.”

What This Means for Travelers

  • Spirit has promised to contact affected passengers directly.
  • Options will include refunds or rebooking on alternative routes.
  • The airline apologized for the disruption, thanking communities and airport partners for their support.

Spirit emphasized that despite the cutbacks, it will continue serving dozens of destinations across the U.S., Latin America, and the Caribbean.

📌 Key Takeaways

  • Spirit canceled Macon-to-Fort Lauderdale flights before launch.
  • The carrier is also pulling out of multiple U.S. airports starting Oct. 2.
  • Parent company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy as part of a restructuring plan.
  • Impacted passengers will receive refunds or rebooking assistance.
