| United Airlines Expands Routes to 15 Cities After Spirit Airlines Bankruptcy

United Airlines is stepping in to fill the gap left by Spirit Airlines’ second bankruptcy filing in a year, adding new flights to 15 U.S. and international destinations.

🆕 New Routes and Added Flights

United announced the following service expansions starting January 6 (tickets on sale Thursday):

New Routes from Newark (NYC area)

  • Newark → Columbia, South Carolina
  • Newark → Chattanooga, Tennessee

Extra Daily Round-Trip Flights

  • From Houston → Orlando, Las Vegas, New Orleans, Atlanta, Baltimore, Miami
  • From Chicago → Orlando, Fort Lauderdale, New Orleans, Las Vegas
  • From Newark → Orlando, Fort Lauderdale
  • From Los Angeles → Las Vegas

Expanded Central America Service

  • Houston → Guatemala City (3x weekly)
  • Houston → San Salvador (3x weekly)
  • Houston → San Pedro Sula (1x weekly)

Other Adjustments

  • Extra flights between Houston, Chicago, and Los Angeles
  • Larger planes on Chicago → New York LaGuardia to help connect passengers to new routes

Why United Is Expanding

Patrick Quayle, United’s SVP of Global Network Planning, explained:

“If Spirit suddenly goes out of business it will be incredibly disruptive, so we’re adding these flights to give their customers other options if they want or need them.”

⚠️ Spirit Airlines in Crisis

Spirit Airlines has filed for bankruptcy again, after years of mounting losses, failed merger attempts, and debt struggles.

  • Declared bankruptcy last November and again in 2025
  • Reported a $1.2 billion net loss in 2024
  • Canceled flights to 11 U.S. cities (including Portland, OR, and San Diego)
  • Scrapped planned launch of service to Macon, Georgia

CEO Dave Davis admitted the airline needs “more tools to best position Spirit for the future” despite earlier restructuring efforts.

United vs Spirit

Spirit pushed back at United’s announcement, insisting it remains committed to survival:

“While we appreciate the obsession certain airline executives have with us, we’re focused on competing and running a great operation,” said Duncan Dee, Spirit’s SVP of Communications.

“Suggesting anything else is wishful thinking on the part of a high-cost airline looking to eliminate a low-cost competitor so they can fulfill their ultimate goal of charging American travelers the highest fares possible.”

📊 Key Takeaway

With Spirit’s future uncertain, United is quickly filling the market gap by expanding into 15 cities and adding international connections.

  • Good news for travelers: More route options and additional flights.
  • Bad news for low-cost competition: If Spirit doesn’t recover, airfares could climb as big carriers dominate.
