What Happened
The aircraft took off shortly after 8:30 p.m. Sunday. According to FlightAware, the plane was already about four hours over the Atlantic Ocean when it began turning back toward the United States.
It landed back at Newark shortly after 5 a.m. Monday, roughly eight hours after departure.
Medical Response
Upon landing, the plane was met by medical teams.
The passenger experiencing the medical issue was treated on the ground, United confirmed.
No further details regarding the nature of the emergency were released.
Passenger Rebooking
All passengers were placed on another flight and were expected to depart again on Monday evening.
Previous Incident on the Route
This is not the first issue involving United’s Newark–Cape Town service.
In August, a flight on the same route had to turn around after the aircraft lost part of a wing mid-flight.
