Overview
Southwest Airlines is preparing to cancel multiple routes in the coming months, including a daily flight many travelers rely on.
The changes come as part of a broader overhaul of the airline’s business model.
Recent Changes at Southwest
As Southwest restructures its operations, it has introduced several major policy updates:
- Ending its long-standing free checked bags policy
- Charging passengers who cannot fit into a single seat
- Ending its open seating system
- Prohibiting portable batteries inside checked and carry-on bags
Many of these changes have been met with frustration from customers, especially the removal of free checked bags — a signature Southwest perk for decades.
Flight Route Reductions
Southwest is also restructuring its route map, resulting in several permanent cancellations.
Canceled Routes
The following flights will be discontinued:
- Baltimore ↔ Ontario, California
- Previously a daily flight
- Burbank, California ↔ St. Louis
- Previously a weekend flight
AirlineGeeks confirmed the cancellations through a Southwest spokesperson.
Despite the cuts, Southwest reports that its total number of flights is still slightly up year over year, due to new additions elsewhere in the network.
When the Cancellations Begin
Travelers have been given plenty of notice before the changes go into effect.
Final Operating Dates
- Baltimore → Ontario
- Last flight: August 3, 2026
- Burbank → St. Louis
- Last flight: August 2, 2026
Passengers still have several months to adjust travel plans or select alternative carriers.
Southwest Maintains Strong Presence in California
Even with route cuts, Southwest continues expanding across California.
According to Travel Agent Central, the airline will reach a record 139 scheduled daily departures out of San Diego on peak travel days in August and September 2026.
New and Expanded California Routes
New flights include:
- San Diego ↔ Santa Barbara
- Burbank ↔ Honolulu
- Ontario ↔ Honolulu
- Long Beach ↔ Portland
- Long Beach ↔ Seattle
Expanded service:
- Doubling flights between
- San Diego ↔ Portland
- San Diego ↔ Salt Lake City
- San Diego ↔ Seattle
These additions, however, will not compensate for travelers who frequently use the Baltimore–Ontario or Burbank–St. Louis routes.
Why Southwest Is Canceling Flights
Southwest has not provided specific reasons for these cancellations as of December 2, 2025.
However, schedule adjustments are common across all airlines and typically reflect:
- Shifts in passenger demand
- Strategic realignment of route networks
- Operational efficiency decisions
Regular travelers are advised to stay updated on airline route changes in case their usual flights are modified or removed.
