| North Texas Flight Chaos: Communications Outage Grounds Thousands

DALLAS–FORT WORTH, Texas — Flight operations across North Texas are back to normal after a weekend of mass delays, but travelers are left wondering: could it happen again?

What Happened?

On Friday, two fiber optic cables were accidentally cut, knocking out radar and communications for air traffic controllers at both DFW International Airport and Dallas Love Field.

  • The outage forced a five-hour ground stop.
  • Thousands of passengers were stranded.
  • One controller was heard saying: “I know the whole metropolitan area is out of radar.”

Severe storms on Sunday added more delays, worsening the chaos.

Passenger Impact

The outage left travelers scrambling:

  • Isabella Berry, flying from Columbus, Ohio: “I was supposed to have a 2 ½ hour flight and I was on the flight for 7 hours.”
  • A mother from Allen, Texas, missed seeing her son before his military deployment: “All the flights tomorrow are booked, so I’ll be missing my weekend with him. I’m pretty upset.”

FAA Blames Frontier & L3Harris

The FAA attributed the failure to multiple data issues caused by Frontier Communications, while also faulting contractor L3Harris for not ensuring redundancies worked properly.

  • American Airlines reported more than 1,000 flights delayed or canceled, affecting at least 10,000 customers.
  • The airline criticized both Frontier and L3Harris for a slow response.

Aviation litigation consultant Bonnie Hayes noted:

“Big carriers like American take the hardest hit, but they also recover the fastest. Everything is designed to restore order quickly.”

Congress Demands Fix

Lawmakers are already pushing for solutions. Under the new FAA Reauthorization Act, the agency must:

  • Audit aging communications and navigation systems.
  • Develop a modernization roadmap to prevent future failures.

L3Harris issued a statement saying it “fully supports FAA modernization efforts” and responded swiftly after the outage.

Traveler Frustration

Frequent flyer Teresa Dodson summed up the mood:

“Having a flight actually on time is very rare. When you travel a lot for work like I do, you just have to adapt.”

⚠️ Takeaway: The North Texas outage was a stark reminder of how fragile U.S. air traffic infrastructure can be — and how quickly travel plans can unravel.
